The explosion in social networking sites over the past decade has transformed the way we communicate. To this end I have included equipment and workflow strategies to enable this for humanitarian and environmental campaigns which can be integrated into existing social media strategies used by a NGO or charity. I also run workshops on mobile journalism using smart phones for humanitarian and environmental organisations needing still images, audio, video or written text pieces or mixed media.

I have and will work in hazardous environments (HE) if covering humanitarian or environmental issues whether the cause is natural disaster or conflict. I don’t do war photography or the traditional ambulance chasing body-bag photojournalism as it doesn’t help show the cause or solution to the problem, neither does it help find peaceful solutions to conflict.

I prefer photographing documentary/street style using flash light or with available light and accept commissions for editorial and fine art projects that use my unique style and point of view on topics of food, culture, traditions, people and the human condition.
Street Photography Commissions
One of Gary’s specialities is street photography, which makes for a powerful way of producing photographs in an honest and engaging way. His style allows an organisation to connect with its staff, supporters or customers on a personal level that captures the pride and values of the subjects, in addition to boosting satisfaction and confidence in its customers.
Street photography is not normally commissioned for advertising or for commercial use due to its random nature, but it is being used more and more by advertisers and companies as it is a popular art form, about reality. It has been used as art décor for eating establishments, construction works on train stations, café’s, city wide cultural studies and brand awareness campaigns by advertising companies.
Although street photography in its purist form, makes for some what random encounters, a loose brief with the mood, aesthetic, or description of what you are wanting to say can bring surprisingly good results. Model releases can be obtained by an assistant or two who follows myself as I make the photographs and negotiates with the subject/s for signing the release.
An alternative is to carefully stage the scene, using pre-hired or encountered talent from the street for more controlled result, but to look convincing needs the eye of a street photographer to be successful.
